Associate Professor Tom Ford

MBChB (Hons), PhD, PGCME, FRCP (Edin), FRACP, FCSANZ

Associate Professor (A/Prof) Thomas Ford is a recognised leader and expert in angina and complex coronary intervention, based on the Central Coast. Originally from Edinburgh, Scotland, he emigrated to Australia in 2010 and now lives locally with his wife Naomi, their two sons Harry and Angus, and their dog Maisie. Outside of medicine, he enjoys spending time with his family and is a keen golfer, surfer and runner.

A/Prof Ford qualified as a doctor at age 22 from the University of Dundee, earning the University Medal (Captain WA Low Prize and Medal 2007). He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and a Fellow of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand. A/Prof Ford is also a co-founder of the Central Coast Heart Attack Service, established in 2019, which provides essential 24/7 emergency care for heart attack patients across the region. He currently holds public appointments at Gosford Hospital where he is the stream lead for Cardiology Research and Training and is an Associate Professor at the University of Newcastle. Additionally, he practices at Eastern Heart Clinic, Prince of Wales Hospital (Sydney), performing structural and valve interventions, and at Lake Macquarie Private Hospital, where he performs complex coronary procedures.

A/Prof Ford is a proctor for rotational atherectomy and complex percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), continuously expanding his expertise through regular overseas clinical placements and ongoing collaborations with colleagues internationally. His efforts have been instrumental in bringing intracoronary imaging, physiology-guided coronary procedures, and advanced calcium modification techniques to the local area, enabling local treatment for patients with complex coronary artery disease.

Academically, A/Prof Ford has published more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific articles focusing on coronary artery disease, angina, and advanced invasive cardiac techniques. His PhD research, completed during a three-year interventional fellowship at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital in Glasgow—the UK’s largest volume PCI centre—earned him the Bellahouston Medal, the University of Glasgow’s highest academic distinction for doctoral theses. This internationally recognised research continues to shape contemporary approaches to angina management. Local research conducted on the Central Coast under his leadership has been published in international journals and featured in national news.

Previously, A/Prof Ford has served as the Australian National Young Ambassador to the European Association of Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (EAPCI) and as the elected NSW representative to the Royal Australasian College of Physicians’ Advanced Training Committee in Cardiology. He has presented his work as international invited faculty at the major cardiology meetings, including EuroPCR, European Society of Cardiology (ESC), American Heart Association (AHA), and Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT, USA). His contributions have been recognised by awards from both EuroPCR (Winner, PCR’s Got Talent) and the British Cardiac Society (‘Best of the Best’ Clinical Abstract in Interventional Cardiology).

A/Prof Ford is passionately committed to clinical excellence and patient-centred care. A dedicated team player, he works closely and collaboratively with valued colleagues through regular heart team meetings and dual-operator procedures, ensuring the best possible outcomes for patients on the Central Coast.
